Practice Profile

The practice, Simon Whiteside Architect, was established in 1978 and is based in Pulham St. Mary, near Diss on the Norfolk / Suffolk border. The practice offers high quality design skills and a personal, friendly, flexible service that can be tailored to meet individual needs.

The practice specialises in restorations, alterations and extensions, particularly to Listed Buildings, and the conversion of barns, stables and other agricultural and non-domestic buildings, together with the design of new individual houses and small developments. It has successfully completed hundreds of projects, frequently for repeat clients or on client recommendation, with a wide range of contract values.

The practice benefits from a well established working relationship with Conservation Officers, Planners and Building Inspectors, mainly in the South Norfolk, Mid Suffolk and Breckland Council areas, as well as with local builders.

Having been trained in and practising modern design and building techniques, Simon has also developed a broad knowledge and understanding of the local vernacular and traditional building techniques, such as clay lump and oak frame, and actively supports the use of ecologically sound building practices.

From the outset, it was Simon's intention to remain as a sole practitioner, with the mutual benefit of allowing a personal contact with clients throughout the duration of a project. The ethos has not changed, although Simon now operates in partnership with his wife, Pat, a trained interior designer, who is also the practice manager.
